I was confused and lost the first time I set foot on Hirel’s Beach. For as far as I could see, a monochrome expanse of nothing – nothing but sand and mud – a huge and deeply flat horizon of cold and grey. The only evidence of a sea were the shells crunching underfoot as I walked out. Returning again and again, I was undoubtedly attracted. More often than not: no waves, no spray, perhaps one or two lifeforms taking shape against the horizon of mudflats and marshes. Puzzled by this place, and seeking to better comprehend its magnetism, I began documenting my experience through photographs. This series examines the peculiarity of Hirel’s Beach while also questioning the impact of human activity on natural environments.
